Tshilidzi Richard Matoro is now penetrating international music markets having recently come back from Canada ,currently preparing to go to France but as the common saying goes “behind the glory there is a story”. Richard, a son of a carpenter from the rural village of Muledane in Venda fell in love with music from a very young age even when his parents adviced him to pursue a teaching career after he matriculated at Sam Mavhina Secondary in 1992.He was already sold to music.

Even when he had to both work and continue schooling at the tender age of fourteen Richard was already into music while staying his brother who bought a lot of musical equipment,” My brother dropped me in an ocean of music by buying a variety of music instruments and allowing me to utilize them”. He worked with his brothers and father as a carpenter who were also doing brick-laying, “As young as I was I had to work so I can finance and oil the engine of my studies.”Richard made it against all odds and enrolled as a music student at the University of Venda in 1994; in 1995 he earned a certificate in music from the same institution, Univen. He further enrolled for a bachelor’s degree in music majoring in saxophone from 1995-1998.He further enrolled for his Honors in 1998.Richard is gifted and versatile when it comes to musical instruments he played guitars an Saxophone for artists like Khakhathi and friends , Muthivhi Francis ,G7th ,Top beat etc . From performing with Holy Spiritual Group in parties and weddings back at home in Venda until he matriculated, He further worked with artist like Master Mabunda,Bra Bushy,Thuthukani Cele,Noel Khumalo,Godfrey Mokoena,Mzwanele Solomon,Brickz P,Majozi Joe,Rev G,Gabriel “The great”Tshisikule,Emmanuel Mamphogoro,tancred,Bra Nekhofhe,Netshaulu,My saxo lecturer Joe Malinga and many others.

“It was in 1999 that I moved to Johannesburg like many others in the music industry that come to the city of gold to seek greener pastures that’s when I hooked up with an old friend and Managing Director of GTP studios Gabriel Tshisikule who later offered to teach me Sound Engineering”.Matoro went further to record big artists like Jahman Chiganja,Khakhathi and friends ,The Roots,Healing Sound,Twins,Joe Kgopa,Patrick Makhubele and many others.It was only in 2004 when his big break come where he perfomed at the Standard Bank Joy of Jazz in Newton Johannesburg sharing the stage with the cream of theJazz crop the likes of Judith Sephuma,living legends such as Sipho “Hotstiks”Mabuse,Bra Hugh Masikela,Mxo,Ndumiso Nyovane , Louis Mhlanga at PTA state theatre and many other established Jazz artists.

In 2006 -2007 another opportunity presented itself when he worked as a music composer for television programs Soul City under Word Of Mouth Productions working with experienced Producers and Directors like Duma Ndlovu, Ntshavheni Luruli, Uwe Beckman. “He also composed music for SABC 2,Open Varsity, Hluvukani program produced by Melotsi Productions. He composed music for a SABC 2 documentary called “Who am I”, Game show(its all about money)He does Jingles, adverts and voiceovers .And he does all these projects under his very own recording studio “MAT music production”

This Christian, married father of three still finds time to visit his loving wife(Christian) and children in Venda to make sure they are happy and update them on his latest achievements and goals .He has released two gospel album using his Venda name Tshilidzi Matoro when the first album failed to attract much attention he didn’t give up because his second album caught fire and received very good success.But around the Jazz cycles he is known as Matoro in Jazz, Richard says”If I didn’t do music I would have become a social worker because I am truly passionate about helping people”.

Richard has graced stages both locally and internationally after he left the nest of his friend GTP Studios to start his own music label “Mat music Production” He has been in Canada, United States of America, Atlanta, France, Botswana, Congo, Swaziland, and he will be in America this coming December and Qatar. So what plans does the horn blower has? “A third album which will be a Gospel according to Jazz album,more international performances and discovering ,tutoring and nurturing new talent equipping them with knowledge that I obtained from varsity, what I have learned in more than two decades in the music industry and sharing my experience on what I gathered on the international platforms”. Under his filmmaking business venture “Reed Entertainment” Richard Matoro plans to produce movies and comedies.
