Faray the Great is a Zimbabwean born and bred Singer, Songwriter and Guitarist. Born on the 9th of March 1991 in a family of 3 children in Gweru,
Zimbabwe. Real name Farai, Malvin Mafukidze he did his primary and high school education at Stanley Primary and Fletcher High School respectively. He developed a keen interest in music at a tender age.Without any formal music background he pursued the passion he had in the guitar instrument.
A musical uncle introduced Faray to the guitar and blues music at age 15.Music by B.B King, Jimi Hendrix, Hugh Masekela, Oliver Mtukudzi and Eric Clapton were the order of the day. He also gave Faray his first guitar, a nylon classical guitar. Faray taught himself the instrument and soon enough played in churchs. With the emergence of YouTube he learnt and mastered modern skills and techniques of music that he would
need in his music journey.
He joined local gospel groups the likes of ‘Called to Worship’ playing acoustic and lead guitar for artists including Shyleen Maningi and Gideon Mutsvedu. He worked as a session artist for 2 years at Real Sound Records in Gweru. Through working with artists and music producers including Oskid Prince Tapfuma, Shingi Mangoma, Samkoko, Midlands State University Band (Kamerata) and Chakie in Zimbabwe he gained massive experience in recording and live performances.
Faray recorded his debut album titled Foundations (Moto werudo) in 2014.He moved to South Africa and formed his band playing in Johannesburg at Pata Pata Restaurant, Neighbour Goods Market in Braamfontein, S.A. Indies Music and other clubs. Faray believes that music is more than just
organised noise but it is an experience and he aims to deliver that unique music experienceto his audience each time he performs. He is not limited to genre but believes in experimenting and fusing different sounds to create new and exciting experiences for his audiences.
Faray the Great performs with his live band set comprising of a drummer, bassist, keyboardist, two female backup vocalists and himself on lead vocals and guitars. He does acoustic sets incorporating African drums and percussion instruments. Special solo performances are also part of his package. He plays at concerts, festivals, corporate functions and also exclusive invitation eventsall over the world. His music is appealing to
the mature listeners comprising mostly of the 23 year range going up.
Faray specialises in a genre called ‘World music’ whereby He blends different sounds and rhythms from various ethnic groups around the world to create his distinct sound. He uses various instruments such as the ‘Mbira’ of Zimbabwe, the Djembe drum, acoustic and electric guitars. Faray believes that music is a global language which has the ability to bring people of different nationalities, colour and race together as one.
To Faray the Great music can be a great instrument to preach peace, love and unity to the world and to bring about positive change in our world.
